UMA is here to assist you on your educational journey when you’re ready to begin. We have a rolling admission policy, which means we accept applications throughout the year. We do, however, recommend that you apply by July 1 to begin in fall and by November 1 to begin in the spring.

Our University offers several programs that lead to a license or certification required for employment in a particular occupation. Programs offered by the University may or may not meet the conditions for licensure or certification in all states. Please consult the University’s information page to view information on program compliance with state licensure requirements. The University makes an effort to ensure that information about compliance with state licensure requirements is up to date, but licensure and certification requirements change frequently and you are encouraged to contact the licensure or certification authority to determine current requirements.

Step Two: Submit Official Transcripts or GED/HiSET Test Scores

High School/GED/HiSET:
Students who have not completed 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited institution will be required to submit a high school transcript or GED/HiSET test scores.

University/College Transcripts:
Students who have previously attended any regionally accredited institution will be required to submit official transcripts.

Competitive Program Admission Requirements & Deadlines

The below listed programs have specific requirements and/or application deadlines. Please understand, applicants applying to a competitive program with a specific deadline must submit all application materials by the deadline. Applicants who do not submit all required documents by the listed deadline will not be reviewed for admission.

Admission to UMA’s B.Arch is competitive with emphasis on your Design Document Submission. Each fall class size is limited to 20.  For consideration to this competitive program, applicants must submit ALL application materials to UMA by February 15. If applicants do not submit all materials by this deadline, applicants applying after the deadline will be reviewed on a first-come-first-serve basis until the class is full.

To be admissible for the Bachelor of Architecture degree program, students must complete the following requirements:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Two Letters of Recommendation and/or Teacher Evaluations
  • Design Document Submission: A Portfolio is required from all applicants. Please see our application page for detailed information.
  • Transfer Applicants: Official College Transcripts
  • Transfer, Current & Alumni Applicants: Minimum Cumulative G.P.A.: 2.5

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may qualify for admissions by completing comparable course work at UMA and will be admitted into the Pre-Architecture track of the Liberal Studies Program. Enrollment in the Pre-Architecture track does not guarantee admissions to the Bachelor of Architecture degree program.

Enrollment Decisions – Admission decisions will be mailed out first week of March.

Deferral Requests – UMA does not grant deferrals. Applicants who receive admission and wish to defer will be required to re-apply to a future year and resubmit a portfolio and the required letters of recommendation. Transcripts will be kept on file and do not need to be re-submitted unless additional coursework from previous institutions has been completed.

Early application is encouraged because class size is limited to 20 slots per year. Admission is competitive.  To be admissible for the Bachelor of Science in Aviation degree program, students must complete the following requirements:

  • 1st or 2nd Class Medical Certificate with a Student Pilot’s License from a FAA certified Aviation Medical Examiner
  • High School/Transfer GPA of 2.0 (“C” average) or higher
  • MAT 030 Algebra I or waiver
  • Introductory Flight with Maine Instrument Flight

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may qualify for admissions by completing comparable course work at UMA and will be admitted into the Pre-Aviation track of the Liberal Studies Program. Enrollment in the Pre-Aviation track does not guarantee admissions to the Bachelor of Science in Aviation degree program.

For consideration to this competitive program, applicants must submit ALL application materials to UMA which will be reviewed yearly on a rolling basis. Early application is encouraged because class size is limited to 12 seats each year in Bangor and 6 seats each year in Lewiston. Admission is competitive with the greatest emphasis placed on grades in science courses.

Associate of Science/Certificate:

To be considered for admission to the program, all applicants must have the following:

  • A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • Passed all courses indicated by placement tests in math, reading, and writing with a grade of “C-” or better. A math placement test is not required for those who have passed a college math course. Reading and writing placement tests are not required for those who have passed ENG 101.
  • Applicants are required to have taken one year of a laboratory science, preferably biology or chemistry with a grade of “C-” or better and have satisfactorily completed courses in mathematics.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Grades of “C-” or better in courses applied toward degree credit.

Students accepted for admission are further required to have a complete physical examination within three months prior to entering the program. In addition, students must begin the Hepatitis B vaccination series at least two months prior to beginning the first clinical semester. Students must be immunized against tetanus within the last ten years. Students must have MMR Vaccine or titer. Students must have PPD within one year. Students must have had a Varicella titer or Varicella vaccine series or documentation from a physician stating history of disease before beginning clinical courses in September. In addition, the Influenza vaccine will be required before November 1st each clinical year.

It is solely the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the completed application and related materials (such as high school transcripts, test scores, any transcripts of grades beyond high school recommendations, etc.) are received by the Office of Admissions. Early application is encouraged because class size is limited.

The Dental Hygiene program is located exclusively on the Bangor campus. For consideration to this competitive program, applicants must submit ALL application materials to UMA by January 31. If applicants do not submit all materials by this deadline, the application will not be reviewed for admission. UMA does offer an early action admission review. Current high school seniors who apply to the Dental Hygiene program before November 15th will be notified mid December of the early admission decision. All complete applications received after November 15th will be included in the regular review that takes place in February.

To be admissible for the Dental Hygiene program, applicants must complete the following requirements:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • High School or College-level Biology with lab (grade of C- or higher)
  • High School or College-level Chemistry with lab (grade of C- or higher)

Admission reviews will be conducted in February with admission offers made no later than March 31. Admission is highly competitive with the emphasis placed on grades in certain classes and cumulative grade point average (GPA). Review the ranking criteria (PDF). Additionally, as this is a rigorous program, applicants’ prior English and math course grades will be holistically reviewed to ensure applicants have the necessary foundation for academic success. Applicants may not be offered admission if it is determined they do not have the foundational English and math skills required for enrollment.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may qualify for admission into the Pre-Dental Hygiene track of the Liberal Studies program by completing comparable course work at UMA. Enrollment in the Pre-Dental Hygiene track does not guarantee admission to the Associate or Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree program.

Before entering the clinical portion of the dental hygiene program, normally in September of the second year of the curriculum, students are required to have a physical examination, an eye exam, have selected immunizations and titers, and be currently certified in healthcare provider cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or equivalent. Once admitted into the clinical portion of the curriculum, an annual PPD, maintenance of CPR certification and medical insurance coverage are required. Applicants considering dental hygiene need to be aware that this program is academically rigorous and physically demanding, requiring long periods of time in a seated position. Tasks require hand-eye coordination, visual acuity, fine motor dexterity and close-focus vision.

Courses and clinical training in Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene require effective communication skills in speaking, reading, and writing in English at a level that ensures the student’s ability to benefit from and make satisfactory progress in academic instruction involving patient treatment and safety. A student must be able to effectively communicate with patients during treatment and obtain necessary verbal informed consent during patient care and potential medical emergencies. Students will be asked to indicate their English language proficiency in each of the following areas: speaking, reading, and writing.

Bachelor of Music: Students applying to the Bachelor of Music degree must pass the Bachelor’s music audition prior to acceptance. When you apply, you will receive an email from the UMA Admissions department with a link to a secure form to submit your audition. This email will be sent to the personal email that you provided on your application and will be addressed from the Admissions department (umaadm@maine.edu) and should be delivered a day after your application has been successfully submitted.

Music: Contemporary and Popular Music program note: Bachelor of Music program applications are accepted on a rolling admissions basis and are not subject to the January 31st application deadline.

To be admissible for the Medical Laboratory Technology program students must complete the following requirements:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • High School Biology with lab (grade of C or higher)
    • or BIO 110 Introduction to Biology w/ lab (grade of C or higher)
  • High School Chemistry with lab (grade of C or higher)
    • or CHY 100 Fundamentals of Chemistry w/ lab (grade of C or higher)
  • 2.00 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher
  • 300-word essay addressing why you are interested in the MLT program, what your professional goals are, and what qualities you feel you have that will help you be a good Medical Laboratory Technician*

Admission to the MLT program is competitive. There are 15 seats available for each summer. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit all application materials early as admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, meaning students are admitted until the cohort is full. For students who are admissible to UMA but do not meet the MLT-specific requirements are admitted to the Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies, Pre-Medical Lab Technology track. Once admissions requirements are complete, students must submit a change of program request to the UMA Advising office. Students who meet the MLT admission requirements but are declined MLT admission are also admitted to the Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies, Pre-Medical Lab Technology track.

  • The required essay should reflect the most current intentions and qualities of the prospective student. If not admitted for the first fall semester, students will be required to send in a new essay for subsequent fall MLT selections.

UMA offers admission to the nursing program twice each year for both the fall and spring terms. Nursing applicants are reviewed on a rolling basis until the program is full. We encourage applicants to apply by December 15th for Spring Entry and August 15th for Fall Entry. All new applicants who do not meet UMA’s Nursing program requirements can be admitted to pre-nursing status to gain eligibility.

Application Deadline: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

To be admissible to the UMA 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, applicants must complete the following requirements (subject to change):

  • Two High School or College-level Science with Lab courses with a grade of B (not B-) or higher (within the last 10 years)
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Applicants who previously attended a school of nursing must be in good standing and eligible for readmission at their current/former school of nursing. Any student who was dismissed from a school of nursing must complete the BSN Supplemental Admissions Essay (PDF).

Additionally, as this is a rigorous program, applicants’ prior English and math course grades will be holistically reviewed to ensure applicants have the necessary foundation for academic success. Applicants may not be offered admission if it is determined they do not have the foundational English and math skills required for enrollment. *NOTE: Science and math courses must be completed within the previous 10 years to be considered for admission review.

To be admissible for the RN to BS in Nursing Completion Program, students must complete the following requirements:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution
  • A minimum GPA of 2.50
  • RN License
    • for new AS graduates the RN license must be completed before the second semester in the program

Transfer students who have not completed UMA’s Associate of Science in Nursing core education requirements must complete the following before receiving the BSN degree from UMA:

  • A communications course
  • ENG 101 College Writing
  • Fine Arts or Humanities course
  • PSY 100 Introduction to Psychology
  • PSY 308 Human Development
  • SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology
  • BIO 110 Introduction to Biology
  • BIO 210 Anatomy and Physiology
  • BIO 321 Microbiology

STAT Transfer Program

To participate in the STAT Transfer Program, a student must:

  • Be enrolled in the final semester of a Maine Community College Associate of Science in Nursing program
  • Earn a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Complete the STAT Transfer for Nursing Form (PDF)

For consideration to this competitive program, applicants must submit ALL application materials to UMA by January 31. If applicants do not submit all materials by this deadline, the application will not be reviewed for admission. UMA does offer an early action admission review. Current high school seniors who apply to the Veterinary Technology program before November 15th will be notified mid December of the early admission decision. All complete applications received after November 15th will be included in the regular review that takes place in February.

To be admissible for the Veterinary Technology degree program students must complete the following requirements:

  • Minimum 2.75 Cumulative GPA
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • High School Biology with lab (grade of C or higher)
  • High School Chemistry with lab (grade of C or higher)
  • MAT III – Algebra II

Admission reviews will be conducted in February with admission offers made no later than March 31. Admission is highly competitive as the class size is limited to 36 students per year. Emphasis for admission is placed on grades in certain classes and cumulative grade point average (GPA). Review the ranking criteria (PDF). Additionally, as this is a rigorous program, applicants’ prior English and math course grades will be holistically reviewed to ensure applicants have the necessary foundation for academic success. Applicants may not be offered admission if it is determined they do not have the foundational English and math skills required for enrollment.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may qualify for admission into the Pre-Veterinary Technology track of the Liberal Studies program by completing comparable coursework at UMA. Enrollment in the Pre-Veterinary Technology track does not guarantee admission to the Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology degree program.

All accepted students must provide proof of rabies vaccination and show proof of health insurance prior to registration.
