Week One - July 16-20

The Psychology of YOU
Students will explore how genetics and environment mix to create their unique selves. What role does temperament play? How have your parents and siblings contributed to who you are today? Does it matter if you are the first, middle, last, or only child? Find out more about yourself, your talents, and your learning styles.

From Pixel to Print
This course will take students through the steps of digital capture (exposure,) basic Adobe Lightroom processing and printing. Students can foster a growing interest in photography and the arts, or just learn how to take awesome photos of stray dogs. Upon completion of the course each student will have created a small portfolio of images. Students are required to provide their own digital camera, anything from a basic point-and-shoot model to an advanced SLR model is appropriate.

Culinary Arts
YoUMA is pleased to offer students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a week of culinary experiences designed to impart culinary training and knowledge. Class will be held in UMA’s complete commercial kitchen. Training will include: knife skills, cooking techniques, soups & salads, meat & vegetable cookery, menu planning, nutrition, breads & desserts, international cuisine, sauces, and decoration. There will be a Baking & Pastry Program for those students who return for week 2. In addition, food history and how different cultures affect our cuisine will be explored. Students will enjoy hands on experiences in the kitchen beginning on the first day under the direct supervision of professional chef and culinary instructor Kevin J. Michaud, MMH. Bon appétit!

Fun with Photoshop
This studio course will educate students about the fundamentals of the Adobe Photoshop software program. Students will gain skills in the basic editing of photographic images, understanding of color systems, file compression and output. The course will consist of classes during which the introduction of various tools and techniques will be made, followed by time to work with the new material and consult the instructor for assistance. Inventing Your Sustainable Space
Join the architecture department and put your ingenuity to the test! The world of design is ever-changing and we are always introduced to new architectural challenges. This course will focus on building a sustainable future. From transport systems to living spaces, students will be designing futuristic communities. Explore how the simplest materials can be used to craft ideas that solve future problems. Utilize the concepts of space, scale, and light to excite all of your senses and develop your own unique idea. Additionally, the Reach Program has agreed to pay the camp registration fees of all students who register for this course and commit to continue building their skills with Reach in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Robotics
This two week course will consist of a series of ten workshop labs in which the students will build and program an autonomous robot. Students will start with basic electronic components and the building of simple circuits. Students will then add a microprocessor and some programming code to control input and output signals to the electronic circuits. Putting the electronic circuits and the microprocessor on a small mobile platform with controllable electric motors driving the wheels will produce a completely programmable robot, capable of sensing its environment and responding appropriately to various stimuli. Note: Students who wish to attend this course must enroll in both weeks of the YoUMA program. Additionally, there is an extra $75 materials charge associated with this course. Students will keep their creations!

Week 2 - July 23-27

 

Being Better at Being You
This highly engaging and interactive course is based on UMA’s COL 100: Introduction to the College Experience course. The course will be delivered in workshop format. Students will be led through activities designed to identify strengths, create self-awareness and goal setting. Students will be introduced to techniques that involve time management, study skills and test taking strategies. Reading for understanding and note taking will be covered too. Wrapping up the week will focus on career development that will lead to pathways to post-secondary education. We will use a diverse range of exercises: depending on the size of the group- large and small group, there will be individual work (identifying personal goals).

What Would Sherlock Homes Do? (How to make up your mind about everything)
What makes a good question? How do we keep ourselves from being fooled by rumors, gossip, first impressions, hearsay and outright lies? This course will be a hands-on, intensive and interactive exploration of the art of inquiry.  Combing the tools of the historian with the tenacity and resourcefulness of the detective, we will challenge the way in which we think, how we arrive at conclusions, and why we’re wrong almost all of the time.
