Visit to l’École française du Maine
The French Club recently visited the French immersion school in South Freeport, l’École française du Maine. First, we observed all the classes, in which teachers from France immerse the children in the language, all the while following the same national curriculum that children in France learn. UMA French club members then read stories to the children in French. One group of students even practiced their numbers in French by telling the children what numbers to add and subtract in their math class! Professor Chelsea Ray made the children laugh with a puppet show. Everyone then sang songs with the children’s chorale and had a delicious lunch. We had a wonderful day! Un grand merci to the founders of the school, Willy and Elizabeth LeBihan, for letting us experience “a day in the life of French school children”!
French Club Video
The students of the French Club created a video in French as part of an application for a grant from the Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques. In the video, they describe their desire to heighten interest in French and help children better understand the historical importance of French in Maine.
